Elk River Trails

About the

The Elk River Trail is a rail trail running alongside the Elk River Water Trail from Gassaway, Braxton County, through Clay County, to Clendenin, Kanawha County, through rural and rugged territory in central West Virginia. The 73.3-mile-long rail trail also has an intersecting 18-mile-long rails-with-trail section running along Buffalo Creek that features a company providing railbike rides. The Elk River Trail is owned or leased by the State of West Virginia and operated by the WV Division of Natural Resources, State Parks Section.

The 101-mile-long Elk River Water Trail extends farther than the rail trail – from the Sutton Dam in Braxton County (the geographic center of West Virginia) to Charleston, the state capital.

The trails are ideal for hiking, biking and horseback riding and provide easy access to local boating, fishing and kayaking, and tubing opportunities along the Elk River.
